Day 1 Depart USA
Evening departure.

Day 2 Florence
Arrival into Florence Airport. Pick up your rental car at the airport. Florence is an open-air exhibit of art and culture. The heart of the Renaissance period and the home of the fine arts and literature, Florence is a powerful symbol of Italian and European culture. See the sculpture of David by Michelangelo, or perhaps the romantic Ponte Vecchio, or Giotto’s bell tower. There are so many monuments and works of art you may choose to view. There are many palaces and countless churches, including Santa Croce containing the tombs of Michelangelo, Galilei, Machiavelli, and other great men. Other attractions include the stupendous Italian gardens at Boboli, the Gothic Duomo, surmounted by the famous Brunelleschi cupola and the Piazza della Signoria. In between your sightseeing, enjoy Florentine cuisine, a tradition of simple dishes prepared with genuine, tasty and fresh ingredients. Cereals, bread, vegetables and olive oil (which must be extra-virgin) are the basis of many dishes that just have to be tried in one of the many superb restaurants in Florence. The area surrounding Florence is famous for being the birthplace of Chianti, one of the most famous of Tuscan wines.

Day 3 Florence/Viareggio
You may want to visit Viareggio, on the Versilia Riviera, a popular beach resort. Viareggio is a town of about 60,000 inhabitants whose history as a tourist resort dates back to the end of the 19th century. See the promenade, which is also an elegant shopping area busy both in winter and summer.

Day 4 Pisa/Lucca/Montecatini Terme/Pistoia
You may consider driving to Lucca, a beautiful little Tuscan town considered one of Tuscany’s best-kept secrets. Protected by massively thick 16th-century walls, Lucca is a fine example of medieval and Renaissance architecture and antique markets. The city’s restaurants have a superb reputation. Make the best of it for lunch before driving on to Montecatini Terme (approx 19 miles), known for its thermal baths and spa treatments. You may consider booking yourself at one of the wellness and curative centers. Refreshed and relaxed, drive to Pistoia (approx. 10 miles), where, after settling in at your hotel of choice, you are ready for dinner.

Day 5 Pistoia/Siena
Pistoia offers numerous museums, monuments and, 2 miles out of town, one of Italy’s best Zoos. Depending on your interests, not far from Pistoia is Torre del Lago Puccini (Museum of Puccini) or Collodi (Pinocchio’s monumental park). Or, you may consider driving to Siena (approx. 66 miles) a wonderful city that is home to some of the most precious medieval art and architectural treasures. Siena offers a never-ending number of cultural sights and interests: the unique “Palio” and wine tasting in the old wine bars, romantic walks along the narrow alleys and excursions outside the city in the Siena Chianti area and in Val’Orcia

Day 6 Siena/San Gimignano/Cortona/Arezzo
San Gimignano, located about a half hour’s drive from Siena, is a spectacular city of towers (at one time there were 72, now there are only 17), sitting on top of a hill with a majestic view into the surrounding valleys. San Gimignano has retained all its old streets, walls, gates, palaces, strongholds and towers. Have lunch in San Gimignano. You should make your next stop Cortona, another beautiful hilltop town overlooking Lake Trasimeno. Its cyclopean walls, still in great part preserved, are said to be 3,000 years old. Of Etruscan origin, the town is favored by many American expats who have houses here. Writer Frances Mayes, the author of Under the Tuscan Sun has been a local resident for many years. After Cortona you may consider driving to Arezzo.

Day 7 Arezzo
Spend your morning sightseeing Arezzo. An early Etruscan settlement, Arezzo is an important market for products from the fertile surrounding districts, and trades in textiles, clothing, shoes, olive oil, antiques, and, most importantly, gold and jewelry. After lunch, an hour’s drive will take you to Florence, the capital of the arts. According to UNESCO, 60% of the world's most important works of art are located in Italy and approximately half of these are in Florence.

Day 8 Pisa
Pisa’s major monuments include the Campo dei Miracoli (Piazza Duomo), one of the most famous sights in Italy and the world. It’s formed by a complex of four buildings, in a unique Pisan Romanesque style, which has alternating rows of white and greenish-gray stone. Begin with the The Duomo, which was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and was later subject to various restructuring work. Close by stands the world-famous Leaning Tower, an elegant round construction. Designed as a bell-tower for the cathedral, work began in 1174 based on a project by Bonanno Pisano and was completed in the 14th century. View the Romanesque Baptistery, whose work began in 1152, and the Camposanto, which is a cloister of vast galleries. As a great university city, Pisa is full of life. Its center is full of all sorts of meeting places: pubs, restaurants, pizzerias, inns, and aperitif bars. Along Lungarni or in the adjacent streets of Piazza Garibaldi, you can become immersed in the Pisan dolce vita, stopping off for the classic aperitif.

Day 9 Florence (airport) to USA (or extend your stay)
Transfer to the airport, surrender your rental car, and board your return flight home, arriving the same day.
